Managing the Sweetness Within

As a longtime journalist who has lived with Type 1 since 1977, I write about pregnancy and Diabetes. My book, Balancing Pregnancy With Pre-Existing Diabetes: Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby, (Demos Health, 2010) is the first insider’s guide about what it takes to get and stay pregnant with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, and includes insights from more than 50 women with Diabetes as well as advice from top medical experts in the field of diabetes and pregnancy. The book also covers preconception, new motherhood, pregnancy loss and infertility. My blog, Managing the Sweetness Within, addresses the intersection of Type 1 Diabetes, infertility, and pregnancy. What’s it like to do each of them right? It’s all about managing the sweetness within.

“I blog about life as a young professional living with Diabetes, emphasizing outreach, support and advocacy with a passion for teens and young adults.”

Dia-Beat-This

For more than 18 years, I’ve lived with Type 1 Diabetes and learned that having a network of support contributes beyond all imagination to my Diabetes management and control. I’m thankful to have found the Diabetes Online Community, or the DOC. While I once was a coward and hid behind the disease, I now choose to embrace it because it has brought me joy, experiences and friends I can’t imagine not having in my life. As an adult, I’ve become a vocal advocate for the disease in the hopes of helping someone else through my experiences as others have done for me. We all want the same thing — a cure. But in the meantime, I want others to understand this disease, and I want to share my experiences with others in the hopes of gaining more friends and more support.

My website and blog is devoted to my personal experiences and my life with diabetes. It will never be sugar-coated (forgive the pun) and will always be honest – good or bad. I hope you’ll find it useful and pass it along to others. My purpose is solely to reach out to other diabetics and people directly affected by the disease. You can also find me on Juvenation and TuDiabetes. In my local community, I work as a volunteer with two diabetes agencies. I’m currently serving as the publicity chair for the Huntsville JDRF office and a trained mentor through JDRF’s Alabama office. I also serve as the co-chair for Hot Shots – a local advocacy and outreach group in North Alabama. You can also find me on and TuDiabetes under Victoria Cumbow. As a patient and health blogger, I follow the Healthcare Blogger Code of Ethics and the Health on the Net Foundation Code of Ethics.

“Erin is a wife, mother of two teenagers, Type 1 Diabetic, Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator and artist. Creatively Controlled Chaos allows her to showcase her art (Creatively) and her Diabetes (Controlled Chaos) but on some days, her Diabetes is Creatively Controlled and the art becomes a little Chaotic. It’s all TITO = Totally Imperfect Totally Outstanding!”

EDONA designs

I’m a married, mother of two, Type 1 Diabetic who Creatively Controls the Chaos of my life as a diabetic and artist. I was diagnosed Type 1 on May 21, 1972. I’ve been artistic for as long as I can remember. I currently work with the local JDRF on an Adult Outreach program and I’ve realized how very important it is to reach out to people to educate them on life with Diabetes.

My life is “CCC” but isn’t everyone’s? Creatively Controlled Chaos. My mom says I adapt. Not so. I do not always adapt. Sometimes I break down and can’t keep anything controlled creatively or not. I’ve decided it is time to get back to my blog. I’m going to learn to balance the Creative and the Chaotic sides but honestly they are just simply two major parts of me and they will not always be balanced. You see… Creative = my art and Chaos = my Diabetes. Sometimes they flip channels and Creatively Controlled = my Diabetes and Chaos = my art. Like I said, not always controlled but just plain me.
