Barb Wagstaff of Diabetes Advocacy
Son; Type 1 Diabetes, March 2000
“I am a mother, a pancreas, and an advocate trying to make a difference in the lives of people with Diabetes and their families.”
A parent of a child with Diabetes who decided to create her own unique Canadian Diabetes website about a year after the diagnosis of her son. This creation led to the site being the hub of various advocacy initiatives including change in the federal tax law to make it easier for people with Diabetes to claim the disability tax credit. The site has also served as a place to unite people and create change in various provincial health programs to offer expanded support for insulin pumps and Diabetes supplies. The site also provides detailed information on what is new in technology and research while keeping parents up to date on the rights of their children with Diabetes in Canadian schools.
The Diabetes Advocacy website over the years has also expanded to include a blog which highlights the ups and downs of living with a child with Diabetes.
