El pasado fin de semana la comunidad diabtica entr en shock al saber de la noticia delfallecimiento de Emilio Fernndez, conductor del programa de televisin Platcame, con Emilio Fernndez, quiendedic su vidaa ayudar personas que viven con diabetes y obesidad desde su diagnstico con diabetes tipo 1 a los ocho aos de edad.
A la familia de Emilio (muy especialmente a Maggie, su mam) extendemos nuestras sinceras condolencias.El vaco que deja Emilio es enorme. Mexicano de nacimiento, su figura trascendi barreras geogrficas gracias a las facilidades de los medios sociales, tocando las vidas de miles de personas que viven con diabetes en Mxico y alrededor del mundo.
En este duro momento, honremos la memoria de Emilio.

Pero vayamos ms all
Una manera de honrar la memoria de este guerrero que se nos fue es trabajando para evitar que se pierdan ms vidas hermosas de personas que viven con diabetes.
Notimex report que Emilio:
falleci este sbado en un accidente automovilstico, derivado de un ataque diabtico
Pero bien sabemos que los ataques diabticos no existen. La desinformacin que se origin en Agencia de Noticias del Estado Mexicano ya se ha propagado aotros medios. Es lamentable la confusin que puede crear entre las personas que no tienen diabetes notas de este tipo, y la frustracin que produce entre quienes vivimos con diabetes.
Los episodios dehipoglicemia severason reales y el riesgo que presentan es mortal. Y ms escalofriante an resultan los resultados de unestudio publicado en septiembre del 2013, segn el cualcada 2 minutos en promedio una persona vive un episodio de hipoglicemia severa. Afortunadamente la mayora no resultan siendo fatales, pero viendo que puede ocurrir (como en el caso de Emilio), no podemos quedarnos de brazos cruzados:
- Creemos consciencia:escribamos a Notimex, informndoles del error de su nota de prensa y brindndoles informacin real, sobre qu es una hipoglicemia y sus riesgos.
- Eduquemos en nuestras comunidades: compartamoseste excelente artculocon medios de comunicacin locales, ayudando a eliminar mitos.
- Combatamos injusticias: en Venezuela elGlucagn(una medicina que puede salvar personas con diabetes en medio de una hipoglicemia severa) est muy escaso, poniendo en riesgo miles de vidas.
No esperemos que otros lo hagan. Es NUESTRA obligacin como pacientes informados, abogar por nuestra causa, educar a la comunidad, corregir desinformacin, y luchar contra las injusticias que siguen afectando las personas con diabetes.

Last weekend the diabetes community was shocked upon learning the news of the passing of Emilio Fernandez, the host of the television program Platcame, con Emilio Fernandez, who devoted his life to helping people living with diabetes and obesity since his diagnosis with type 1 diabetes at the age of eight.
To Emilios family (especially Maggie, his mom) we extend our heartfelt condolences.The emptiness that Emilio left is enormous. Born in Mexico, his figure transcended geographical barriers thanks to the use of social media, touching the lives of thousands of people living with diabetes in Mexico and around the world.

But we know that diabetic attacks do not exist. The disinformation that originated in News Agency of the Mexican State has already spread to other media outlets. It is regrettable the confusion that can be created between people who dont live with diabetes because of notes of this type, and the frustration this causes among those who live with diabetes.
Episodes of severe hypoglycemia are real and the risks they present are fatal. And even more horrifying are the results of a study published in September 2013, according to which on average,every 2 minutes a person experiences a severe hypoglycemia episode.Fortunately, the majority are not fatal, but seeing what can occur (such as in the case of Emilio), we cannot stand idly:
Lets raise awareness:write to Notimex, informing them of the error in their press release and providing the correct information, about what is hypoglycemia and its risks.
Educate our communities:share this excellent article with local media, to help to eliminate myths.
Lets fight social injustices: in Venezuela, the Glucagon kit (a medicine that can save people with diabetes while suffering a severe hypoglycemia) isvery scarce, putting at risk thousands of lives.
Lets not wait for others to do it. It is OUR obligation as informed patients, to advocate for our cause, to educate the community, correct misinformation, and fight against the injustices that continue to affect people with diabetes.
